Over 80 freshmen of the J-school gathered at theWarehouse on Saturday (May 23, 2009) for a lecture presented by UT Associate Professor Donna De Cesare. The award-winning photographer was in Shantou en route Sichuan to train children in the post-earthquake region photo-documentary skills.

Donna teaches photography at the School of Journalism and has spent 16 years of her life documenting the life and times of gangsters in Central America, her works are now exhibited at the 2009 Guangdong Photo Biennial in Guangdong Museum of Art.

Students who have submitted their work on Sunday evening were given a short tutorial on photo techniques.

During the 3-hour lecture, Donna shared her images and lifelong experience in documentary photographic assisgnments with students who turn up at theWarehouse. Following the lecture, students were given an assignment to shoot a 5-picture story to be presented on the next day for a critique session.

“Students need to take more pictures to improve,” she told theWarehouse blog, “I’d suggest that they shoot at least one roll of film a day!”

That’s 36 pictures for those who are film uninitiated.

Donna left the school on Tuesday for her Sichuan assignment, theWarehouse’s Jerry Su and Amber Chung accompanied her on the 11-day photo-journey, more on that when they return.

Note: If you missed Donna’s lecture on Photography basics, the video recording of her presentation will be uploaded as a podcast here.
