At 7 a.m. on June 1, 2026, Cheung Kong School of Journalism and Communication held a flag-raising ceremony and patriotic education activity in front of the library on the East Coast Campus. Zhu Shikui, Deputy Secretary of the Youth Committee of the school, along with over a hundred student party members, party applicants, and newly recruited league members, participated in the event.
The National Flag Guard of Shantou University marched with resolute steps, escorting the Five-Starred Red Flag towards the flag tower. The majestic melody of "March of the Volunteers" echoed throughout the campus, as the Five-Starred Red Flag rose slowly against the morning sun. All teachers and students looked solemn, singing the national anthem, expressing their love and respect for the motherland through their voices.
After the flag-raising ceremony, Zhu Shikui delivered a micro-party lesson under the national flag that closely related to the new communication major. He put forward three hopes to the students: First, to read and understand the real China with a sense of seeking roots, like the predecessors who "retraced the northwest corner" and went deep into coastal villages and the Gobi Desert in the northwest. "Only by understanding the most authentic China can we tell the real stories of China well"; second, to respond to the real society with an attitude of seeking truth, not to fabricate stories for traffic or to make up data for credits, but to respond to social concerns with solid first-hand research; third, to make visible contributions with a sense of responsibility, starting from small things like making a good short video to help farmers or giving a good interview class, and practicing the original intention of patriotism.
"The roots of journalists will always be rooted in the motherland." Zhu Shikui advised the students to carry the consciousness of seeking roots, the attitude of seeking truth, and the original intention of responsibility, and to become new communication students who do not disappoint the era and the country.
Xie Jiaqi, a Party member representative and a journalism major of the 2023 grade, stated that journalists are the recorders of the times. "Party members should implement the principle of 'serving the people' in every detail verification and manuscript polishing, holding the pen firmly and keeping a straight heart." Luo Fukang, a new League member representative of the advertising major of the 2025 grade, said that joining the League is just a new starting point, and in the future, he will write the answer sheet of youth with practical actions.
This event serves as both a solemn lesson in patriotic education and a mission inheritance lesson for journalists. Journalism students will take this as a starting point, understand China through their travels, hone their skills in pursuit of truth, and contribute their youthful energy through taking on responsibilities.
