The Cheung Kong School of Journalism and Communication at Shantou University adheres to the educational philosophy of "internationalization, emphasis on practice, and forward-looking vision". It has established a comprehensive and interdisciplinary journalism and communication talent cultivation system that follows the laws of journalism and communication as well as the laws of talent development. Based on China's new media practice, facing the trend of globalization, embracing the new technological revolution, it is committed to cultivating a large number of outstanding journalism and communication reserve talents with high political quality, good humanistic cultivation, solid theoretical foundation, and strong professional skills.


The college boasts an educational, teaching, and research team composed of recipients of national talent projects, leading talents in the national news and publishing industry, and distinguished professors in higher education teaching recognized by the Ministry of Education. This team has formed a faculty structure dominated by young and middle-aged Ph.D. holders, with strong teaching abilities and excellent research potential. Among the full-time teachers in the college, 79% hold Ph.D. degrees, 71% have overseas study experience, and nearly 40% have experience in the news and communication industry.


The college currently offers two undergraduate majors and five professional directions. The Journalism major is divided into two directions: Integrated Journalism and International Journalism and Communication. The Network and New Media major is divided into three directions: Network Communication, Audiovisual Communication, and Brand Communication. It has master's degree authorization points for the first-level discipline of Journalism and Communication, as well as master's degree authorization points for the Journalism and Communication major. The Journalism major is a national-level first-class undergraduate major construction site. Courses such as "Fundamentals of News Gathering and Writing," "Fundamentals of Advertising Design," and "Selected Readings of Marxist Journalism Works" have been approved as national-level first-class undergraduate courses; "Public Welfare Photography" and "In-depth Reporting" have been approved as first-class undergraduate courses in Guangdong Province. "Construction and Practice of the 5S Excellent Journalism and Communication Talent Training System for Telling Chinese Stories Well" won the first prize of Guangdong Provincial Undergraduate Education Teaching Achievement Award.


The college boasts the "International Communication Research Center for Chinese Culture," a social science research base in Guangdong Province, and the "Digital Humanities and Intelligent Communication Research Center," a key research base for humanities and social sciences in Shantou City. It has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the China News Service. The college is equipped with advanced professional teaching laboratories, including a photography teaching center, an artificial intelligence-integrated future media laboratory, a full-media virtual studio, and a media big data analysis and image processing laboratory.


The college adheres to a training model oriented towards practical journalism and communication, establishing the "Teaching and Research Center for Applied Journalism with Chinese Characteristics" and launching the "Fan Changjiang Class for Cultivating Excellent Journalism and Communication Talents". It emphasizes the cultivation of students' humanistic literacy, international perspective, and new media skills. Students are proficient in practical skills such as news gathering and writing, photography, planning, editing, data analysis, and new media communication, and are equipped to face the challenges posed by new media technological changes. They have achieved excellent results in various professional competitions, including winning the second prize in the "Challenge Cup" nationwide competition, the bronze medal in the National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the first prize in the National Advertising Competition, and the championship in the University Journalism Awards.  


Students have abundant opportunities for learning and exchange both domestically and abroad. The college organizes annual internship groups in Beijing and the Bay Area to intern at mainstream media outlets such as China News Service, Workers' Daily, China Youth Daily, China Women's Daily, People's Daily Online, Beijing Daily, Beijing Television, Beijing News, Beijing Evening News, and Foshan Media Culture and Tourism Group. Students can participate in summer and autumn semester programs at overseas universities such as the University of Hong Kong, Waseda University in Japan, the University of Macau, Chinese Culture University in Taiwan, and Shih Hsin University in Taiwan.


The college's brand academic activities are diverse and regularly conducted. We organize a series of events such as the Chinese Journalists' Day, the China News Awards on Campus, the Spring Academic Week, the Journalism Practice Teaching Workshop, the Bowen Series, and the New Media and Communication Academic Frontier Seminar. We invite numerous renowned experts, scholars, editors, journalists, and commentators from both domestic and international backgrounds to share their insights, broadening the horizons of both teachers and students.


The employment quality of students is high, with a graduation enrollment rate of around 20% and an employment rate consistently above 90%. Outstanding undergraduate graduates have taken up positions in renowned media outlets and enterprises such as People's Daily, China Daily, China News Service, China Youth Daily, Beijing News, Southern Daily Group, Caixin Magazine, Baidu (China) Co., Ltd., Tencent, Ifeng, and Edelman International Public Relations.
