University-Local Government Synergy Accelerates! On the morning of May 26, the first research symposium on university practical education work organized by the Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League was held at Cheung Kong School of Journalism and Communication, Shantou University. The two sides reached preliminary consensus on topics including the formation of the "Little Tangerine" Youth Publicity Volunteer Service Team and the co-building of practical teaching bases. Through a model of "professional training + real-world tasks," they aim to build a youth publicity team rooted in Shantou, achieving a dual empowerment of improving local publicity quality and enhancing student capabilities.
Attendees included Huang Shan, Secretary of the Shantou Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League; Zhuo Xunjie, Deputy Secretary; Chen Yichun, Secretary of the Shantou University Youth League Committee; Mao Hao, Dean of the Cheung Kong School of Journalism and Communication; Yu Shanyan, Party Committee Secretary; Hong Mengdian, Deputy Party Committee Secretary; Zhu Huibin, Deputy Secretary of the Youth League Committee; and Huang Xian, Coordinator of the Journalism program, along with other relevant university and local government officials and faculty representatives. The meeting was chaired by Yu Shanyan.
Yu Shanyan first welcomed the delegation from the Municipal Youth League Committee and expressed the hope to fully leverage the organizational strengths and bridging role of the Communist Youth League to open up channels connecting university talent cultivation with local development needs. During the meeting, Mao Hao provided a detailed introduction to the Cheung Kong School of Journalism and Communication's program offerings, faculty team development, and distinctive features of its undergraduate education, with a particular focus on practical teaching brands such as the Beijing Internship Program and the Greater Bay Area Internship Program. The college's promotional video, The Yangtze River Flows into the Sea, was also screened, comprehensively showcasing the college's achievements and characteristics in cultivating applied journalism and communication talent.
Huang Shan focused on introducing the "Implementation Plan (Draft) of the Shantou Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League for Establishing the 'Little Tangerine' Shantou Youth Publicity Volunteer Service Team." He pointed out that the service team will collaborate with the Municipal Publicity Department, Shantou University's School of Journalism, and the School of Business, focusing on key municipal initiatives such as the "Hundreds, Thousands, and Tens of Thousands Project" and the building of a youth-friendly city. The team will delve deeply into the stories of returning youth entrepreneurs and young businesspeople, using a youthful perspective to narrate the stories of Shantou's youth. "We not only need a publicity team to document the growth of young people, but also aim to leverage major event platforms such as the Teochew Business Conference and volunteer service exchange activities, allowing students to hone their skills through real-world practice."
Chen Yichun noted that Shantou University possesses high-quality journalism and communication talent resources, and that university-local government collaboration can achieve a dual empowerment where "the locality gains publicity, and students gain practical experience." He remarked that this cooperation comes at an opportune time and expressed anticipation for promoting the production and transformation of student works through diversified project collaboration.
During the discussion session, Hong Mengdian, Huang Xian, and Zhu Huibin spoke, introducing the training objectives, curriculum design, and innovative practical education approaches of the college's Journalism program. A consensus was reached that high-quality practical platforms are a key pillar for talent cultivation. Both sides expressed their desire to continue deepening university-local government synergy, promote the deep integration of professional courses with off-campus practice, integrate the "Little Tangerine" project into the teaching system, and enable students to hone their professional skills in real social scenarios, thereby cultivating high-quality, application-oriented journalism talent.
This symposium marks a new phase in the university-local government cooperation between the university and college levels and the Municipal Youth League Committee. The two sides will subsequently accelerate the selection and training of "Little Tangerine" team members, jointly building a youth publicity volunteer service brand with Shantou characteristics.
