GMHP Nepal Internship 2018 – Program Description:
The J-School’s Global Media Honors Program will offer an opportunity for three students to journey to Nepal this summer* to intern at one of Kathmandu’s premier magazine companies, ECS Nepal.
(*Any student interested in the possibility of interning in Nepal should either already have or obtain ASAP a Chinese passport that will allow international travel to be booked. If students do not have a passport, they are encouraged to go to their hometowns and begin the process of obtaining a passport.)
The internship is open to ALL J-School sophomores, juniors, and master’s degree students BUT is particularly suited to students in the Global Media Honors Program; any internship applicant must be physically present and enrolled at STU for the fall 2018 semester in order to give a presentation on their internship.
The strongest three students selected from written applications and a group interview process will earn a six-week internship with ECS Nepal, (http://ecs.com.np/) a highly-respected Nepalese magazine and media company. Airfare, Chinese domestic transportation, travel insurance, and Nepali visas will be covered by the J-School program; other expenses should be covered by students. (Based on past interns’ experience, students may expect to spend 3,000-4,000 RMB for all personal expenses, including housing rental, for a summer internship; our partner Binod Bhattarai will assist interns in finding appropriate accommodation in Kathmandu.) The internship will last at least 6 weeks, roughly from the end of July to the beginning of September.
Program co-leader and accomplished Nepali journalist Binod Bhattarai will be on hand at STU in late May to offer interns an intensive training session on Nepali culture, society, and media before they journey to Nepal in July. Binod will also be on hand in Kathmandu over the duration of their internships to serve as a consulting teacher and mentor for interns.
For those familiar with the set-up of the Nepal program in previous years, there will be one notable change this year. Briefly, that is:
Internship is open to more J-Schoolers. As mentioned, this year’s internship will take THREE interns and is open to ALL J-School sophomores, juniors, and master’s degree students, as long as they are physically present and enrolled at STU in the fall of 2018. All applicants should be, however, strong at English; with that in mind, GMHP students are strongly encouraged to apply.
ECS Media — Internship Description and Applicant Requirements:
The J-School’s Global Media Honors Program will offer an opportunity for THREE highly-qualified students to complete their six-week, mid-term internship at ECS Nepal, based in the capital city of Kathmandu; ECS produces a number of English-language magazines about Nepal and Asia, and also a high-end Chinese-language travel magazine distributed in China. This internship will fulfill the requirements of the mid-length internship required by the J-School, and students will receive credit for it upon the completion of their internship and the work associated with it.
Applicants should be strong English-language and Chinese-language writers, responsible reporters, flexible in their needs and expectations, and be able to maintain a positive attitude in difficult situations. They should be hard-working; they should understand what it is to be professional, and be able to do it; they should know how to work well with others, and get along in a team. They should be extremely curious about other countries and cultures; as Nepal is a poor, developing – yet stunningly beautiful and extremely hospitable — country, they should be willing and eager to deal with what at times might be considered a hardship destination.
Candidates should be in good physical health, and be flexible in dietary requirements. Any chosen applicant should put all his/her effort into contributing to and learning from the opportunity the internship provides, and make a positive contribution to the J-School through his/her experience.
