Spearkers’ profiles:
Lily Lu：
Leader of the SND (Society of News Design) affiliate in China. She is an ambassador for visual journalism around the globe and a powerful advocate for the craft in nations where news design is just emerging.
Lily has a master of arts degree in Communications and Public Relations from Rowan University in New Jersey. In addition to her work bringing East and West together for SND (for which she was honored with an SND presidential commendation last year), Lily is an accomplished visual editor who has won multiple awards from SND and other press associations. When she’s not coaching designers at media organizations throughout China, she is a frequent speaker at industry events, most recently Oulu24 in Finland.
A senior designer at the Star-Ledger in Newark, N.J., for 16 years, Lily is best known in SND circles for making the impossible possible: successfully launching an SND affiliate in China. Under her leadership, activity in the region has exploded. It hosted a pre-Beijing Olympic News Design Workshop in Shanghai last fall and a Graphics Design/Asian Boot Camp in Chongqing this spring. Lily is currently organizing two more SND co-branded design training sessions for the Chinese this year.
Bill Gaspard：
Design Director of the China Daily, former president of SND.
Bill has been a SND committee member for a long time. He organized two international conferences of SND, and many other projects. He was the president of both SND and the SND Foundation between 2005 and 2008. In 2008, he was awarded the highest honor of SND—the Lifetime Achievement Award.
In February Bill came to Beijing, to lead the revised design of China Daily. Before that, he worked in the Las Vegas Sun for 5 years as Deputy Editor in-chief. He was a design director of the Los Angeles Times, and was also a senior vision editor of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Daniel Chung：
Expert of multi-media in The Guardian. He is a photographer and cameraman. He is also a teacher of Beijing Foreign Studies University.
The Guardian is in the lead of the application of multi-media. Daniel is an expert in utilizing multi-media onto print media.
After completing a Geography degree in Plymouth and a NCTJ in photojournalism at Sheffield College, Dan Chung went on to work for the Derby Evening Telegraph, News Team Birmingham and Reuters, and is now a staff photographer at The Guardian where he has been for the past four years. Dan is particularly acclaimed for his work in Iraq in 2003, in Indonesia following the tsunami in 2004, and in Pakistan in aftermath of the earthquake in 2006.
Fan Dongsheng:
Executive Vice President and professor of School of Journalism and Communication, Shantou University.
Fan is interested in new media, and he wrote several articles about the internet, the print media crisis and iPad. His new book To Save Newspapers is going to be published by Nanfang Daily Press. He has over 20 years experience in journalism in mainland China, Hong Kong and America. In 1999, he went to America and became the editor in-chief of China Press, during which he got many awards from both China and America political circles, and the China Press was also awarded by the Chinese community, including State Award for Outstanding People and Community Service Award from New York Police.
Fan was graduated from Peking University, where he got a degree of journalism in 1982. Two years later, he got a master degree of journalism in People’s University of China. He is one of the most well-known communication researchers in China.
Jeremiah Foo:
Director and of the Convergent Media Lab of Journalism School, Shantou University. He is known as the “first to teach convergent media courses in China”. He is good at the technologies of print media, the internet and TV.
Jeremiah can speak six languages, and he got a professional qualification of sound mixing engineer in America. He has many experiences in music production, publication and computer technology. He was an executive producer of the website Asia247.tv, and a manager of Sony Music for both artists and music. After that, he was involved in journalism industry, and reported many important technology activities in companies like APPIE, ACER, 3COM. He is the founder of Malaysia Chinese Blogger, and also a technical consultant of Malaysian Association for the Development of Medical Technology.
