Andrew Beck has over thirty five years experience as educationalist, consultant, author, examiner, and curriculum designer. His research interests include communication and design education, cultural work, unpopular music and film, and the impact of the environment on consciousness. He has recently been appointed co-director of the joint research centre for Design, Innovation, and Management (DIAM) at the Tongxiang campus of Zhejiang University of Media and Communication, as well as becoming curator of Coventry University’s Alan Berry Atrium Gallery, a space dedicated to the exhibition of artists associated with the University.
He has over thirty years experience of external examination work, having served as Chief Examiner for business, professional, and academic UK examining bodies. As part of the UK government’s Curriculum 2000 initiative he wrote the AQA’s ‘A’ Level Communication Studies specification.
He has published widely. Recent full-length books include Cultural Work (Routledge 2003), Communication Studies: The Essential Resource (Routledge 2004), Get Set For Communication Studies (Edinburgh University Press 2005), and Critical Skills in Communication and Social Work (Palgrave 2012). He has just contributed a chapter about UK press coverage of the Libya war to Mirage in the Desert: Reporting the ‘Arab Spring’ (Abramis, 2011). The Times Educational Supplement said his bestselling book Communication Studies: The Essential Introduction (Routledge 2002) ‘sets the standards by which future textbooks will be judged’.
His photography has appeared in Camarochn: Flamenco Legend (2006), and been exhibited in the Lanchester Gallery, Coventry, Instituto Cervantes, London, and the Herbert Gallery and Museum, Coventry. In 2009 he was invited to present papers at various events ranging from Nottingham Trent University’s annual Media and Cultural Studies symposium (February) to the Xiamen International Animation Festival (November). Recent research into design pedagogy, art, design and media practices, and intercultural issues in the Peoples Republic of China has resulted in a number of papers produced with colleagues from Coventry School of Art and Design (Karen Bull, John Mair, Sean McCartan, and Andree Woodcock), and his curating of the exhibition ‘Made In Hangzhou’ (October 2008).
In a survey of UK universities’ Media and Communication departments in 2004 The Independent newspaper reported; ‘At Coventry Martyn Lee, Karen Ross and Andrew Beck are the hotshots’ (The Independent, 13 August 2004).
